Grays play two levels below Conference Welling and in the first game in Essex, Athletic produced an impressive performance to hold Welling to a 1-1 draw at Mill Field.
It was probably our boy’s best chance to get through to the 1st Round proper and they dominated most of the game. In the 2nd 45 Welling did improve yet it was Grays who took the lead, sub ALEX ADDAI scoring.
The majority of the 512 crowd scented victory but their hearts were broken when, in the 83rd minute, Sam Corne sneaked in and curled the ball around Lamar Johnson for the Kent boys to equalize.
The replay was Tuesday but Welling swept Grays aside 4-0 with Xavier Vidal scoring all four.
The scoreline certainly flattered Welling who looked edgy for the opening hour against the Ryman League Premier Division visitors.
Despite Grays determination and proud display in front of a crowd of 733, Welling United eventually progressed with some ease but they will need a much-improved performance when they travel to Barwell in the 1st Round.
More on Welling United next week.
